British-born Hugo Tillman spent two years in China, interviewing leading artists. The conversations ranged around their philosophies, fantasies, and their childhoods. From those conversations, Tillman constructed a full-sized set, a sort of 3-D map of the inner psyche. Then he invited the artists to perform a scene within that set. And then he shot his images.
