If I had a tiled kitchen, I'd be all over these. An easy, fairly inexpensive way to dress up your tiles. (p.s. I want that radio.)

Music by birds.
Yes, I'm late to the game on this one. But, in case anyone else is, too, I'm posting it.
(via Utne Reader)
Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.
I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper.
Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

The M Family
A few years ago (five and a half, to be exact -- and I remember because our dog was a wee pup at the time), our church had an optional summer social called "Suppers Six". Over the three months of summer six individuals (or three couples) would get together for supper one evening per month. The groups were put together by someone at church and the point was to get to know others better in our congregation. We decided to participate in the event and were matched with the H's and the M's. It was nice to get to know better people that we had seen on Sundays but didn't really know -- and over good food in each other's homes. I'm glad that we all continue to attend the same church and now continue to see each other in the church nursery/preschool as we all have kiddos!
I was excited when Carrie contacted me this summer to request a photo session for her family. We decided to wait until the fall as Carrie wanted a photo for her Christmas cards while planning it close to her children's birthdays. Not long ago said session took place and here are some of my favorites! Don't these children have the most beautiful BLUE eyes? Thank you, M family! We love you guys!
Rooster cats.
Okay. One more cat post, then I gotta go. The combination of inappropriate cat headdress and their surly expressions made me laugh.

SmartSpace Food Dispenser.
Ooh. I'd love one of these. (Not sure about the plastic knobs, though.)
By securing the dispenser to the wall, you can create additional storage without having it getting in the way on the countertops. Plus, the dry foods inside are now easily accessible with just a twist of the handle. Only one twist dispenses 1 ounce of product perfectly portion-controlled every time! The included measuring cup that fits on each canister makes it easy to work the wall-mounted SmartSpace Dispenser into your cooking routine. This dispenser is a space-efficient accessory for every kitchen.

Nik, Vicki, Sophie and Jake
We had a very enjoyable time today at the Theatre Royal Wakefield in the company of young actors Nik, Vicki, Sophie and Jake, taking some headshots for each of them. The theatre is actively supporting and encouraging young talent and they asked us to come along and take a variety of shots so that these very talented young people will have some professionally taken photographs as a start to their portfolios. They were all great to work with and we were delighted with the results we got. Hope you like the shots guys!

Thank you for being a friend, again
Bea Arthur is my hero - the gays loved her, still love her, and as long as The Golden Girls, Maude and All in the Family are on DVD, will always love her.
Bea loved the gays back - she generously left homeless gay teenagers $300,000!
From The Ali Forney Center web site:
The Ali Forney Center (AFC) is planning to name one of it's transitional residences in honor of Bea Arthur, as an expression of gratitude for Bea's extraordinary kindness and generosity to the homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth served by AFC.
The Ali Forney Center currently operates both emergency and transitional housing programs. The emergency housing program provides short-term shelter aimed at providing stability and guidance to youth suffering homelessness. The transitional housing program is aimed at providing longer-term housing for up to two years while residents pursue the educational and vocational goals that will allow them to live independent lives and overcome homelessness.
The Bea Arthur Residence will house 12 youths. $430K per year has been obtained from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to support it's operational funding. AFC is currently working with the Hudson Planning Group to secure government and private funds to support the acquisition of a building to provide this home. AFC is currently renting all of its transitional housing sites, and has secured a generous three year grant from the Oak Foundation to support its work with the Hudson Planning Group to purchase housing sites. AFC is currently working with Rapid Realty to identify sites in Brooklyn to purchase.
The Ali Forney Center aims to provide LGBT youth with the support and guidance that they should receive from their families. All youth residing in AFC's transitional housing program are required to find employment and finish high school. Youth are supported in pursuing higher education, and are required to save a portion of their incomes. Mental health counseling is offered to our residents to help them overcome the pain and confusion of having been rejected by their families because of their LGBT identities. An intensive Life Coaching program has been developed with dedicated volunteers who help mentor our youth in pursuing their career goals and aid them in developing the skills they need to live independently.

'Golden Girls' star Bea Arthur leaves $300,000 in will to NY group that helps gay homeless youths
Bea Arthur left $300,000 in her will to a New York organization that aids homeless gay youth.
The Ali Fornay Center provides services to more than 1,000 each year, and is planning to buy a building to house 12 young people - and name it in honor of the "Golden Girls" actress.
The head of the center said he is thrilled with the stage and television legend's generosity.
"We work with hundreds of young people who are rejected by their families because of who they are," said Executive Director Carl Siciliano.
"We are overwhelmed with gratitude that Bea saw that LGBT youth deserve as much love and support as any other young person, and that she placed so much value in the work we do to protect them, and to help them rebuild their lives," he said.
The Ali Forney Center offers emergency shelter and transitional housing in seven residential sites in New York. It also operates two drop-in centers offering food, clothing, medical and mental health treatment, HIV testing, treatment and prevention services, and vocational and educational assistance.

Yorkshire Family Portrait Photographer
Today we made a round trip of 123 miles to Litton in the Yorkshire Dales for a family portrait session for 17 lovely people. It was a very long way to travel for a portrait sesssion but Kate hired us quite a while ago to do this, as a special gift for her parents' ruby wedding anniversary. The family hired a cottage in this spectacular location for a week and they thought that as they don't all get together very often, being spread all over the country from Wales to Southampton to Yorkshire, it would be great to take the opportunity to have some photographs taken together. We were privileged that Kate chose us to do this and we'd arranged to work outside if the weather was kind, which is wasn't! Driving along the winding roads through a mixture of drizzle and fog, it wasn't looking good for photographs outside but we kept our fingers crossed for a break in the weather. By the time we arrived at the cottage, it was still very wet underfoot but it had at least stopped raining and we really wanted to make the most of the beautiful backdrop outside. Everyone was brilliant, adults and children alike and got their coats, boots and wellies on to trudge through the wet grass to the spot we'd chosen. After taking some big family group shots of everyone, we took the smaller groups which the family had requested before heading back to the cottage for coffee and the most delicious homemade cake! Thank you for making us very welcome. We really enjoyed your company. It was well worth the long journey and the wet feet! We hope you enjoyed it too.

December 2009 Spur Magazine cover: Agyness Deyn, ph: Patric Shaw
I never wanted to go
I was born from love
And my poor mother worked the mines
I was raised on the Good Book Jesus
Till I read between the lines
Now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
Down the stoney end
Mama let me start all over
Cradle me,
Mama, cradle me again
I can still remember him
With love light in his eyes
But the light flickered out and parted
As the sun began to rise
Now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
Down the stoney end
Mama let me start all over
Cradle me,
Mama, cradle me again
(Cradle me, mama, cradle me again
Mama, cradle me again...)
Never mind the forecast
'Cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the fury and the broken thunders
Come to match my raging soul
Now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end I never wanted to go
Down the stoney end
Mama let me start all over
Cradle me,
Mama, cradle me again
Going down the stoney end...

Supermodels Take It Off For Climate Change
On 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5200 events around the world, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis.
Cameron Russell so inspired by the pictures she saw coming in from around the world on 350.org's Global Day of Climate Action, that she wanted to help. While the one-day event was called 'the most widespread day of political action in the planet's history,' we know that not everyone reads the newspapers. So we figured we'd try to get the point across the best way we know how--with clothes, or really, with the lack of clothes. We hope you'll get the point--feel free to watch it twice in case you got distracted the first time.
350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that science and justice demand.
Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.
To tackle climate change we need to move quickly, and we need to act in unison—and 2009 will be an absolutely crucial year. This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions. The problem is, the treaty currently on the table doesn't meet the severity of the climate crisis—it doesn't pass the 350 test.
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we're harnessing the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009. We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef to your community - and clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.
If an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.

Matthew and Jessica's Paris, Kentucky Wedding Photos
I love how every wedding is so unique and personal to the couple getting married. For Jessica and Matthew, it began with their wedding location, the Cane Ridge Meeting House outside of Paris. Jessica grew up on a farm adjacent to this amazing, historic site (built in 1791, it's believed to be the largest one-room log structure in North America and was the site of one of the largest Protestant revivals in the U.S.).

We were delighted to receive this today from Caroline Mason's mum, Enid. We were privileged to be chosen to share Caroline and Gary's special day in May when they married at Hunslet Methodist church in Leeds, followed by a reception at Rogerthorpe Manor in Badsworth. They chose a storybook album and Caroline's mum bought a smaller copy for herself. Enid's comments sum up perfectly what we are about and how important our clients are to us.
"I have had to send this message to let you know just how much we love the finished album of pictures from Caroline and Gary's wedding. It is beautiful!! The happy atmosphere of the whole day is captured from start to finish. Every time you look at it you notice details that you haven't noticed before. I am so pleased that we ordered the smaller version and will enjoy the day many times over as we proudly show it to everyone. Memories are so important to us all and these albums will keep Caroline and Gary's wedding fresh in our memories always. Thank you so much for your hard work and the care you have taken. It is much appreciated. Best wishes to you both." ENID HARDING
Onion "Gentrification" doormat.
This made me laugh. If you've ever lived in a crap neighborhood and hated your neighbors, you know this feeling. It'd be funny in a bad neighborhood, possibly even funnier in an already gentrified neighborhood.
Our new 19.5" x 29.5" outdoor mat is fade and weather resistant and has a vinyl backing. Perfect for your shit-hole apartment or your cookie-cutter mansion.

I commute to WOMEN every day from Massapequa Park. In the morning I carry my wallet, a beverage (Tab, Fresca or Diet Coke), something to read (The New Yorker or a library book) and a snack for later in the day (an apple, carrots, banana or Fruit Roll-Up).
Lately I have been carrying my belongings in a vermillion leather hobo bag.
Last night I dreamt that I purchased a maroon bowling bag from Prada's spring 2000 collection at my neighbors estate sale. For nine long years that bag has been on my mind, the bag Robert Wyatt photographed on Sierra Huisman.
But that was just a dream.
So, tell me how long before the next one ?
Bag deigner Katherine Fleming will be taking appointments for her sample sale next week.

It's a "So What" kinda day.
Miles and Trane make rainy days better.
"So What" is the first track on the 1959 Miles Davis and John Coltrane album Kind of Blue and is often credited as one of his best works.
It is one of the most well-known examples of modal jazz, set in the Dorian mode and consisting of 16 bars of D minor7, followed by eight bars of Eb minor7 and another eight of D minor7. This AABA structure puts it in the format of popular song structure.
The piano and bass introduction for the piece was written by Gil Evans for Bill Evans and Paul Chambers on Kind of Blue. An orchestrated version by Gil Evans of this introduction is later to be found on a television broadcast given by Miles' Quintet (minus Cannonball Adderley who was ill that day) and the Gil Evans Orchestra; the orchestra gave the introduction after which the quintet produced a rendition of the rest of "So What".
The distinctive voicing employed by Bill Evans for the chords that interject the head, from the bottom up three perfect fourths followed by a major third, has been given the name "So What chord" by such theorists as Mark Levine.
While the track is taken at a very moderate tempo on Kind Of Blue, it is played at an extremely fast tempo on later live recordings by the Quintet, such as Four and More.
The same chord structure was later used by John Coltrane for his standard "Impressions".
