The BIG FLIP clock

I don't know why, but I have a fascination with clocks. (And lamps. And robots. And globes. But I digress...) This one's a real beauty - 43x43x16 cm. A bit too spendy for me, but a beauty nonetheless. Very train station chic.

BIG FLIP

My new roommates - Oskar & Eva.

The newest members of the BB Playhaus Repertory troupe -- Oskar's the black one, Eva's white with a grey stripe on the top of her head. Both are about three months old. Newly arrived from the Humane Society and still trying to figure out where they are and what's going on... but they seem to be having a good time. And I definitely am. I think they'll make excellent east siders.

Superdawg!

I love this picture.

From today's Kayak.com newsletter:

Chicago is known to be one of America's fattest cities and it's no wonder - Superdawg is the Michael Jordan of stands. This vintage drive-in features two huge anthropomorphic hot dog statues atop the roof that rumor has it can be seen from space. Firm, all-beef Superdawgs are topped with boatloads of condiments. Try the brilliant spruce-green piccalilli relish with a Supermalt, Supersoda, or Supershake and a side of crinkle-cut fries. Better book two seats on the way back. (6363 N. Can you name this animal?

It's a newborn panda! Bizarre.

Youth Intelligence :: Volunteer vacation grants

Youth Intelligence
, a premier research and trend analysis service for the youth market, is offering three grants to individuals (over 18 years old) who would like to participate in a volunteer vacation. In return, they only require that you write about your experience.

Having participated in a volunteer vacation in Seoul, I can tell you it's an amazing and eye-opening experience. And, honestly, it's a good way to travel for an extended period of time on very little money, if you're paying your own way. (A bit like bartering your time/energy for room & board.) With this grant, it would be virtually free.

From the Youth Intelligence email:
--------------------------------------------

We have felt for some time that there are many among you who want to make a difference in the world, who want to serve on both local and global levels, but at times have felt a disconnect whether it be financial or logistical. And so we are launching The Intelligence Group’s Volunteer Vacation Grant Program.

Because this program was inspired by many of you who have expressed passion for specific causes, the application will be a creative sharing of your passion for a particular cause. Based on the quality and effectiveness of communicating your passion through these pieces we will select three of you to choose a “volunteer vacation” program that resonates with you, through either Amizade (http://amizade.org/) or Global Volunteers (http://globalvolunteers.org/), which we will fund. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of five of us.

Remember, this program was inspired by many of you who have expressed passion for specific causes and a desire to make a difference. Awardees will be asked to document their Volunteer Vacation experiences (for our daily email trendcentral), in the hopes that your experiences will inspire service among others.

How to apply: Submit a creative piece that shares your interest in a cause and/or specific program offered by Amizade or Global Volunteers. This can be in the form of film, writing, art, music, etc. and you can of course, make it multimedia if you wish. If you can’t send your submission electronically, you can send to

Volunteer Vacation Review Committee
The Intelligence Group
162 Fifth Ave., 6th Floor
New York, NY 10010

Deadline: Must be e-mailed/postmarked by August 9th
Awardees will be selected by September 6th.

Unfortunately, because of legal restrictions, this program is only open to applicants ages 18 and over.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. We look forward to seeing your applications!

Ah, Berlin. Everywhere I turn these days, I see Berlin. Art, design, architecture. I must go to Berlin. I'd stay here just to see this television.

Souvenir camera from Paris.

I really wish they had a better online shop with a little more info and better pictures. But I love this idea.

I don't have a balcony or porch of my own, but, if I did, I'd shell out ten bucks for a birdhouse from Red Envelope.

Check out this odd little critter.

While grabbing the photos for the hippo posting below, I ran across these pictures of a recovering echidna. (Sounds like she was run over.) According to Wikipedia, it's also known as a "spiny anteater." Strangely adorable.

Hippopotomi toothbrushes.

Lorraine sent me this one with the best title ever:
Thug relaxes whilst his teeth get a bit of clean

(Nicely put, L-Dawg.)

Here's the story, according to the press release:
Don't forget your toothbrush day

Bring your toothbrush to London Zoo on July 23 and get price entry. Everyone knows how important it is to brush your teeth and London Zoo s pygmy hippos are no exception! A dental check and thorough tooth brushing is part of the hippos daily routine - and this summer keepers have bought them brand new toothbrushes. As you can imagine the toothbrushes have to be very large and zoo keepers have even colour coded them so they don t get mixed up! Pastel pink for Nicky, the female pygmy hippo, and of course, blue for the male.

Architecture to make the heart soar.

This month's Vanity Fair has a feature on the Novy Dvur monastery in the Czech Republic, designed by minimalist architect, John Pawson.

The full article isn't online, so I'm posting another site with similar pictures. Magnificent.

A Daily Dose of Architecture :: Novy Dvur Monastery

Pawson's own slideshow of his work is also stunning. It includes pictures of the monastery, as well as his own house, mentioned in the VF article. (Apparently the monks from Novy Dvur felt that his living space might be "a bit too austere" even for them.)

Some great large format print ideas from Blueprint. I love these.

Beautiful, reasonably priced tableware.

I'm not a big fan of girlygirl designs - but this store has really beautiful feminine designs that don't scream "girly," and the prices are great. These are two of my faves.

I honestly can't tell if this is a joke.

Or if it's just poor database-driven contextual advertising.

Whatever the case, it caught me completely off guard when I was doing a search.
