The Four Levels of iPod Interaction

from The Urban Etiquette HandbookWhom you do and don’t have to unplug for.

LEVEL ONE
Continue at full blast. Consider increasing the vigor of your head-nodding and/or humming.
• Guys passing out bargain-electronics-store flyers.
• Idealistic-looking whippersnappers holding clipboards.
• Scientologists.

LEVEL ONE AND A HALF
Subtly turn down volume.
• People in the elevator you don’t know.
• Someone attractive who sits down next to you on the train while you are listening to the Goo Goo Dolls.

LEVEL TWO
Make a big show of pressing PAUSE.
• Anyone who approaches you while you’re working out.
• Non-panhandlers on the subway (may be helpfully pointing out that your bag is open, may be distracting you in a Gangs of New York–style pickpocket ruse).
• Co-workers you hate.
• Friends.
• Your parents, if you’re a teenager.

LEVEL THREE
Remove headphones, toss them jauntily over shoulder.
• People in the elevator you know.
• Anyone taking your money or instructions about how to prepare your food.
• Co-workers you don’t hate.
• Your parents, if you’re an adult.
• Police officers.

LEVEL FOUR
Completely remove and enclose in nearest pocket/bag/ purse.
• Co-workers who could have you fired in less than an hour.
• Anyone who’s crying.
• Police officers standing next to someone who’s pointing at you and saying, “That’s him!”

BoGo Light - Help Light the World.

I think I have to order one of these solar flashlights.

The BoGo Light is a scientific, eco-friendly breakthrough that is making an impact worldwide. From Cairo to Cape Town, from the Caribbean to the Amazon, it is improving the lives of individuals, families, and entire villages by replacing costly kerosene, candles, and disposable battery flashlights with an affordable, long lasting, solar flashlight.

BoGo means Buy one, Give one. We want our lights to benefit the less fortunate; therefore, with each light purchased in the developed world, a second identical light will be donated to an organization that will distribute it in the developing world with our direct financial support.

London Underground Signs.

I wantwantwant.

These are extremely rare. They were used by London Underground until about 30 years ago whenever a standard sign was obscured (during maintenance or whatever) and a temporary replacement needed. Like the Routemaster blinds they have lovely, simple graphics and real integrity and history. Beautifully framed and mounted by our local, excellent, framer.

Just to be clear - this is not anti-pug.

It just made me laugh.

McSweeney's Quiz: Zen Parable or Just Someone Being Cruel?

The student Tokusan used to go to Master Ryutan in the evenings to talk and to listen. One night, it was very late before he was finished asking questions.

"Why don't you go to bed?" asked Ryutan.

Tokusan bowed, and lifted the screen to go out. "The hall is very dark," he said.

"Here, take this candle," said Ryutan, lighting one.

Tokusan took the candle.

Ryutan leaned forward, and blew it out.

Quite an alternative to a log cabin.

The Ring House, outside of Tokyo. Stunning.

Takei-Nabeshima-Architects (TNA) architects have designed a striking mini-tower on spec for a planned community in the town of Karuizawa, some 185 miles northwest of the Japanese capital. The Ring House is wrapped in rings of glass and wood and has an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the forest.

Pileus: The Internet Umbrella

Pileus is an umbrella connected to the Internet to make walking in rainy days fun. Pileus has a large screen on the top surface, a built-in camera, a motion sensor, GPS, and a digital compass, and it provides two main functions; A Social Photo-sharing and A 3D Map Navigation.

The photo function is connected to a major web service "Flickr". A user can take photo with a camera on the umbrella, and pictures are uploaded to Flickr in two minutes with context tags via a wireless Internet connection. Users can also enjoy themselves watching photo-streams downloaded from Flickr ...with simple operation of wrist snapping.

Leafy pillow goodness.

To be honest, I will never spend $70 on a throw pillow. But this one made it awfully tempting.

Love in an Notebook

I thought I'm not the kind of girl that would cry when reading a sad romance. I was wrong. Nicholas Sparks, who is this man? How could he write something so mournfully beautiful as the Notebook?
I have watched the movie before, I had anticipated the story, yet when I read the words, when I saw the love unfolding, I couldn't hold back my tears. "The romantics would call this a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. " -- the author was right from the beginning. Summer love, long separation, return of the bride-to-be, passion and obligation, disease, again separation, but all overcome by the everlasting, devoting love.

The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected. Maybe they always have been and will be. Maybe we've lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we've found each other. And maybe each time, we've been forced apart for the same reasons. That means that this good-bye is both a goodbye for the past ten thousand years and a prelude to what will come.
When I look at you, I see your beauty and grace and know they have grown stronger with every life you have lived. And I know I have spent every life before this one searching for you. Not someone like you, but you, for your soul and mine must always come together. And then, for a reason neither of us understands, we've been forced to say good-bye.
I would love to tell you that everything will work out for us, and I promise to do all I can to make sure it does. But if we never meet again and this is truly good-bye, I know we will see each other again in another life. We will find each other again, and maybe the stars will have changed, and we will not only love each other in that time, but for all the times we've had before.

There's more...

"You are Hannah, a lover of life, a strength to those who shared in your friendships. You are a dream, a creator of happiness, an artist who has touched a thousand souls. You've led a full life and wanted for nothing because your needs are spiritual and you have only to look inside you. You are kind and loyal, and you are able to see beauty where others do not. You are a teacher of wonderful lessons, a dreamer of better things."... "Hannah, there is no reason to feel lost, for: Nothing is ever really lost, or can be lost, No birth, identity, form--no object of the
world, Nor life, nor force, nor any visible thing;... The body, sluggish, aged, cold--the embers left from earlier fires, ... shall duly flame again;"

Richard Serra

Sequence - Richard Serra, MoMA American sculptor

A piece of genius. The artistic curve, the way it engages the visitors in a progressing motion, both in space and time. The shadow and slope ratio make the seemingly simple piece profound.

Morbid curiosity.

These strange hybrid animals are kind of fascinating. However, I'll warn you - if you're squeamish, don't dig too far into the site.

None of the animals used in Sarina’s work were killed for the purpose of using them in her art. All animal components are recycled. She utilizes salvaged roadkill and discarded livestock, as well as the many animals that are donated to her. Donated animals are often casualties of the pet trade, destroyed nuisance animals and pests, or animals that died of natural causes. A very strict 'waste not, want not' policy is adhered to in her studio - virtually every part of the animal is recycled in some manner.

Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon at 100

Name the best known work of Pablo Picasso. Guernica! And? Demoiselles d'Avignon.
Picasso, what can I say about this man? What can I possibly say about his artwork? The tension and expression in his art is just so striking that it makes your heart ache.
Demoiselles d'Avignon is in exhibition in MoMA now, celebrating its 100 anniversary. The exhibit lasts until August 27.
