Why Belgian advertising is offline this week.

I'm linking to this in support of the Belgian agencies that are trying to end the free-for-all madness involved in pitching work these days. If you work in design or advertising, you know how painful and expensive a big pitch can be. You should take a look at this and think about re-blogging it yourself.

everything is ok.

I've been meaning to post about these guys for awhile. I love their "everything is ok" barricade tape. And now their "Everything is ok" kit is up for Cooper Hewitt’s People’s Design Award, so it seems like a good time to give 'em a little love.

Vintage Smokey Bear commercial.

It's a shame there are no sweet, simple commercials like this first one anymore. It'd be a nice break from the norm now.

Haagen-Dazs: Good for bees.

Like you need another reason to eat Haagen-Dazs.

Beautify your yard with a free packet of wildflower seeds from Haagen-Dazs -- as a bonus, the nectar will feed endangered honeybees.

Send a self addressed, stamped envelope to:

National Geographic Magazine : Gorilla Massacre.

Shocking, sad, educational and beautiful, all at once. This video "documents the significance of the recent gorilla massacres in the Democratic Republic of Congo." The killings were apparently motivated by a political battle between industrialists and conservationists.

The pictures below show park rangers and people of the area sadly and ceremoniously removing the body of a great silverback from the jungle.

Fatherhood Involvement campaign.

I'm SUCH a fan of the Ad Council Creative: Great Ads. Good Causes. newsletter. Seeing ads that aren't just about selling something is a breath of fresh air.

The "Cheerleader" ad made me grin this morning.

A majority of Americans have identified the absence of the father from the home as the most significant family or social problem facing America. In a lighthearted manner, this campaign demonstrates the critical role fathers play in their children's lives, and provides information on becoming a better dad.

Read a good mag and take a survey for Earth Day.

Readymade magazine has partnered with Nau clothing to donate $1 for every person that checks out the magazine's new digital version and completes a quick (no personal information) survey.

I'm not a fan of print-format online magazines, but I'll admit this one is pretty slick. And I think an earth-friendly promo for it is great.

Our entire Green Design Issue (April/May 2008) is now available online, complete with all kinds of snazzy features like how-to videos and links to websites and products.

Plus, eco-conscious clothier Nau will donate $1 to Climate Trust for every reader who completes a quick survey about this new virtual version of ReadyMade—tell your friends!
(And act fast: the survey will only be up though Friday, April 25th.)

Please help me plant 100 trees.

I've never done this sort of thing, but this is too lovely to pass up.

The Nature Conservancy has started a Plant a Billion Trees campaign. I've decided to reach out to my lovely readers to see if you can help. $1 = 1 tree. Such a small amount of money for such a big global impact. If you can spare a dollar, please click on the widget below to plant a tree. Just use the "Other amount" field toward the bottom of the donation form. Thanks so much, peeps. You're the best.

One dollar, one tree, one planet.

The link above takes you directly to their donation form, but be sure to check out their beautiful site for more information.

Art Bars.

I'm a big fan of Art Bars, organic chocolate bars that have little art cards in them. 10% of Art Bar proceeds are donated to arts advocacy programs. Mmmm. Educational and delicious.

Shea Hembrey's "Mirror Nests" is one of Art Bar's featured pieces. I'll bet it was a beautiful installation.

Help a whale.

The NDRC would like to send 100,000 messages to the Navy, asking them to put safeguards in place to protect whales during sonar testing.

Only 300 North Atlantic right whales are believed to exist -- and unfortunately their migratory route goes right through the area where the U.S. Navy plans to unleash lethal mid-frequency sonar off North Carolina's coast.

WE ADD UP.

Great site. Nice idea.

Pick a shirt design showing your preferred method o' ecohugginess. They'll print a number on it showing where you are in the list of people who do something to help the environment. (Or at least people who bought a shirt.)
